Farmers at work on a paddy field, Atale, Sri Lanka.

Manual work with a mammoty.

Ploughing in tandem using two pairs of 'water-buffalos'.

Ploughing using a two-wheeled single cylinder diesel tractor.
The water-buffalos are still used in small fields. The two-wheeled diesel tractors are replacing the buffalos in ploughing and threshing. Small mechanised threshers are also being gradually introduced. In paddy fields with a large acreage tractors and combine harvesters are being hired for use. The latter is causing unemployment among the village folk.
