'Sri Pathula', on a rock on the banks of the Sithawaka Oya, Thimbiripola, Avissawella, Sri Lanka.

Therre is a legend among the villagers that one of King Rajasinghe's Queens had a craving to see the Sacred Foot-print on Sri-Pada - Adam's Peak, during her early pregnancy. Since it was an arduous climb to the real site, they took the pregnant Queen, at dead of night in a palanquin, all over the country side. They brought her to this sight before dawn and showed her this foot-print, claiming that this was the sacred foot-print on Sri-Pada.

Honey bee hives, Avissawella, Sri Lanka.

The house with honey bees. I went looking for help in harvesting honey, from my single bee box.I was directed to this house in Avissawella. It was a two acre land overgrown with trees and an old bvroken down abandoned house. There were plenty of trees and flowering plants growing in abandon. There were about 50 bee colonies in bee boxes. The owner pointed to the sky overhead with its swarms of bees, making a constant buzz. What an idyllic set-up. Each hive would produce above 6 bottles of honey, twice an year. The market price of a bottle of honey is Rs900/- at present.

At the end of the 'Vas' period (rainy season), Buddhist monks come out of their retreat. A robe is stitched by the 'Dayakayas' (devotees), taken in a "perahara' (procession) and is ceremonially handed over to the Head Priest. These are pictures from the 'Perahera'.

Sri Lankan 'wallker' of the last century, Avissawella, Sri Lanka.

This was the wooden device used to train a child to walk in the 1940s in Ceylon.Any village carpenter could turn this out. This had to be used on sandy soil to give friction to the wheels.
