The profusion of tall trees lining the highway, is gradually disappearing in present Sri Lanka. This part is the old main road to Ampara from Colombo.

Diyaluma waterfalls, Koslanda, Sri Lanka.

During heavy rains in the upper reaches of this river the water falls onto the road. In 1966 I have been held up for nearly 30 minutes on this road by this phenomenon when stones, drift wood and a cascade of muddy water falls on the road below.

District Medical Officer's quarters, Koslanda, Sri Lanka.

The only change I noticed from 1966 when I was its occupant was the change from 'bucket latrines' to a modern toilet. The 'billin tree' with its abundant fruits was still there near the gate. Wild hare, mouse deer and hedge-hogs still frequented the place.

A corridor in the District Hospital, Koslanda, Sri Lanka.

This corridor looked the same when I was District Medical Officer at the District Hospital, Koslanda, in 1966. I took this picture in February 2010. Time has stood still here.

Waterfall by the roadside Beragala-Koslanda road, Sri Lanka.

On the old main trunk road to Amparai the eastern part of the Island of Sri Lanka, from Colombo its western part, you have to go through part of the central highlands. It is beautiful country here with hills, valleys and quite a few waterfalls by the wayside. This is a photo of one of those waterfalls, near a village called Lemastota on this road. It is a good place to have a bath and picnic.
