Feeding the orphan elephants at Udawalawe, Sri Lanka.

Elephants orphaned in the jungles of Sri Lanka are brought to this orphanage run by the Department of Wild Life. They are looked after and released into the Udawalawe wild life sanctuary bordering the orphanage. They come back from the jungle twice a day to get their quota of milk.

Click on each of the web-links below to watch video-clips of the feeding. Keep your loudspeakers on.

Wild elephants on the road to Somawathy Chithya, Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka.

We saw these elephants, mother and child on the road to Somawathy Chathya, Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka. I have given the relevant section from The Sunday Times of Sri Lanka of 4th September 2011 of an elephant count done in SL.

Feeding the wild elephant, Udawalawe, Sri Lanka.

A villager in a 'cadjan' shed sells fruits to feed the elephants on the other side of an electric fence. I took these photos on the 'Udawalawe - Thanamalvila' road, bordering the 'Uda-walawe nature reserve.

On the 'Uda-walawe' reservoir bund.

I took this picture on the highway going over the 'Uda-walawe' reservoir earth bund. You can see the electrified fence which keeps the elephants away from the road. The 'Uda-walawe' nature reserve is on the other side of the fence and has quite a few elephants.
